The Shipyard is responsible for constructing all ships and defensive structures. The level of the Shipyard and the Nanite Factory have an effect on the build times of ships and defense.
You must have:

Level(4) = Large Cargo Ship

Level(4) = Colony Ship

Level(7) = Battle Ship
Level(8) = Bomber
Level(9) = Destroyer
Level(12) = Death Star
